Work in Progress: Horses Head
A stylized sculptural depiction
of a horse in a run. This piece can be hung on a wall and framed by an
additional polished branch or mounted on a mesquite base and displayed on a
table or pedestal.
The mane and beyond will be comprised of several
negative spaces and strands of polished wood with the weathered gray blended
in. This piece of wood came from the trunk of an ancient juniper growing on
a windblown mesa in Palo Dura Canyon, Texas. It took me several years to
find a road back to this lone mesa. The tree was cut, after a full day of
hunting the rugged area and the ravines around its slopes. This twisted
relic was finally hefted into my pick-up well after dark. At 44 pounds per
cubic foot, the five foot log weighed close to 180 pounds.
I share all of the above about the "cost" of the
juniper to give people an added appreciation for this incredibly beautiful
wood. Each piece has centuries of history recorded not only in the annual
rings of the wood, but in the twisted weathered form of the tree.
All of these facts work together to provide a unique
medium to start with. Even if I tried I could not replicate a single
sculpture, so each one is truly a "one of a kind" work of art complete with
its individual challenges and rewards.
