Work In Progress: Moses - Absolute Way
Moses - Absolute Way
Life size
H 52" W 26" Depth 12" |
I found
this particular piece of wood, that "Moses" is emerging from, several years
ago. It weighed approximately 250 pounds. When finished it will hang on
the wall and weigh about 35 pounds or less; even though it will lose very
little height, width, or depth.
The sculpture will be a
depiction of Moses holding the Ten Commandments in one hand and a staff in
the other.
I have wanted to do this sculpture for quite some time for two main reasons.
First, I want to make a statement about the condition of our society.
Secondly, speak of the reality of moral absolutes.
There are moral rights and wrongs. The shifting sands
of today's post-modern mentality are destroying the foundations of the
society that gives the relativists their "rights" to hold and voice their
opinions. Cutting the Ten Commandments out of the fabric of our society,
will destroy the warp of the very tapestry the relativists are trying to
weave. Relativism will ultimately result in a world wide game of Calvin
ball* where each player changes the rules, in each situation, to assure that
he wins, gets to have his own way. That kind of thinking needs to stay in
the funny papers, not become the "law" of our land.
My main intent with this sculpture is to remind all of
us that there is a truth and that the Truth is manifest and realized in the
person of Jesus Christ. There is an incredible sense of security and
peace that comes from knowing Jesus, standing with your feet on the Rock.
* The term Calvin ball comes from the comic strip Calvin and Hobbs. It
is
a game where basically there are no rules, because all that is needed to
change the rules is to state a baseless new one. Sounds like our current
court system.

Absolute Way
In a world of relativity,
with no sure path to tread upon,
the way seems ever changing
all moral absolutes seem gone.
Like straying sheep in a lightning storm
the populace does scatter,
running blindly toward a precipice,
their "right" to run seems all that matters.
Provided by a loving God
is the way that leads them home
guideposts etched so long ago,
by God on slabs of stone.
These commandments make for a better world,
yet reveal the flaw within,
our hearts can't make it home to God,
for we are crippled by our sin.
So God made the Way a Shepherd
Who takes our sin, and heals the lame,
Moses handed us His picture
Christ Jesus is His name.
