Yielding Right

Yielding Right

If on collision course
in the middle of a flight,
to avoid a confrontation
both parties must yield right.

Yielding is a concept,
and yielding is an act,
that requires some form of giving,
a pure and simple fact.

Yet too often what needs yielding
is clutched tightly in our hand,
we hold it as a "right"
and use it to demand.

A "right" to be offended
or to be understood,
a "right" to stay our course
whether bad or good.

What blinds us to the costs
involved in claiming rights?
Why is it so difficult
to change our course of flight?

Perhaps to see the answer
we must choose to look inside,
and see the plank, lodged in our eye,
is a simple thing called pride.
